part II of the roots + wires series

In r+w: you are what you eat, we researched the intersection philosophy and everyday life through social situations that revolved around food & eating, in a playful attempt to explore the common saying 'you are what you eat'. The project involved various investigations into social practice and co-creation - particularly in the form of co-cooking, cooking without a recipe, and research towards a rhizomatic cuisine. It was developed during a 3-month residency at the Incheon Art Platform in South Korea in 2011-12, and presented at the IAP and the Book Society (Seoul, Jan/Mar 2012).

roots + wires

roots + wires exists as an ongoing research into the concept of the rhizome, as popularized in by writings of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari in "A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia". We are interested in the play between the concepts explored within this book and their application in 'everyday life' - in effect, the project(s) are motivated by our desire to find artistically sound ways to link politics and action, without creating didactic situations. To explore this, we employ a diverse array of artistic strategies through varied clusters of experiments, informed by our areas of (non-)expertise, our passion for interdisciplinary collaboration and non-hierarchical working process, our geographical and cultural context, and most importantly, our sense of humour.

From 2004 to 2007, we created r+w: black box, which resulted in the linking of several experiments into a single and repeatable performances. We danced, performed body work, bent circuits, vj'd, created sound from samples of grass and trees, … and presented the results to a live audience at the Rhubarb Festival (Toronto, Feb 08), Making New Tracks Festival (Vancouver, Apr 07), and Salaam Salon V (Vancouver, Mar 07).

In 2008, we collaborated with Ross Birdwise to create r+w: performative, which investigated notions of identity and the act of performance, through physical theatre, choreography, live sound, text, and video performance. We presented the work during the New Forms Festival & SWARM Festival (Vancouver, Sep 08).
